MOE: Europe’s First Regular green methanol feeder routes
X-Press Feeders signed the European Ports Forge Alliance Memorandum of Understanding with six European ports for green shipping corridors. The network includes the Port of Antwerp Bruges (Belgium), the Port of Tallinn (Estonia), the Port of Helsinki (Finland), the Port of Hamina-Kotka (Finland), the Free Port of Riga (Latvia) and the Port of Klaipeda (Lithuania).
The world’s largest independent universal transport company, Singaporean-based X-Press Feeders, has signed letters of intent with six European ports that will significantly accelerate the establishment of green maritime corridors and the wider decarbonisation of the maritime sector in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea. The contracting parties pool resources and expertise to develop and implement sustainable practices in maritime transport. According to the letter of intent:
– The parties will cooperate to further develop infrastructure for the supply and bunkering of alternative fuels, such as green methanol.
– The agreement encourages the development of supply chains for fuels with zero or close to zero greenhouse gas emissions
– Provide additional training programs for port workers and seafarers on the handling of alternative fuels – Use digital platforms to improve gate call optimization
X-Press Feeders and port representatives meet regularly to update and discuss progress on the development of green maritime corridors. Cooperation in establishing these shipping routes:
Green Baltic X-PRESS (GBX): Rotterdam > Antwerp Bruges > Klaipeda > Riga > Rotterdam Green Finland
X-PRESS (GFX): Rotterdam > Antwerp Bruges > Helsinki > Tallinn > HaminaKotka > Rotterdam
Green fuel from OCI
Global Europe’s first regular green methanol feeder shipping routes are scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2024. Green methanol is an alternative fuel that emits at least 60 percent less greenhouse gases than conventional marine fuel. X-Press Feeders sources the green methanol it needs from fuel supplier OCI Global.
Green methanol is made from green hydrogen and the decomposition of organic matter such as waste and residues. OCI’s green methanol is independently certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Association, headquartered in Germany. The ISCC system promotes and verifies the sustainable production of biomass, circular and bio-based materials, and renewable energy sources. According to Francis Goh, COO of X-Press Feeders, the company chose the Nordics and Baltics as the first markets to introduce green methanol-powered vessels because the company noticed that “ports and our customers are very receptive in this market.”
